1. Pre-Umrah Preparation

Spiritual Preparation

Before embarking on your Umrah journey, it's essential to prepare spiritually. This includes:

  • Sincere repentance (Tawbah) from all sins
  • Seeking forgiveness from people you may have wronged
  • Learning the proper duas and rituals
  • Increasing your prayers and Quran recitation
  • Making a clear intention (Niyyah) for Umrah

Physical Preparation

Umrah involves significant walking and physical activity. Prepare by:

  • Building your stamina through regular walking
  • Getting necessary vaccinations
  • Consulting your doctor if you have health conditions
  • Packing comfortable walking shoes

2. Entering Ihram State

What is Ihram?

Ihram is the sacred state of purity and consecration that every Muslim must enter before performing Umrah or Hajj.

Steps to Enter Ihram:

  1. Cleanse yourself: Take a full bath (Ghusl) and perform Wudu
  2. Wear Ihram clothing: Men wear two white seamless cloths, women wear modest clothing
  3. Pray two Rak'ahs: Perform Salat al-Ihram if not a prohibited time
  4. Make intention: Declare your intention for Umrah
  5. Recite Talbiyah: "Labbayka Allahumma Umratan"

Talbiyah Dua:

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ عُمْرَةً

"Labbayka Allahumma Umratan"

Translation: "Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah"

3. Performing Tawaf

Tawaf is the act of circumambulating the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction.

Steps for Tawaf:

  1. Start at the Black Stone: Begin from the Black Stone corner
  2. Make intention: Intend to perform Tawaf for Umrah
  3. Istilam: Touch or point to the Black Stone and say "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar"
  4. Walk counterclockwise: Keep the Kaaba on your left side
  5. Complete seven rounds: Each round starts and ends at the Black Stone
  6. Pray two Rak'ahs: After completing Tawaf, pray behind Maqam Ibrahim

Important Tawaf Tips:

  • Men should perform Raml (brisk walking) in the first three rounds
  • Keep making dhikr and dua during Tawaf
  • Don't push or harm others in crowded conditions
  • If you lose count, assume the lesser number

4. Sa'i Between Safa and Marwah

Sa'i is walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail.

Steps for Sa'i:

  1. Start at Safa: Begin at the hill of Safa
  2. Face the Kaaba: Look towards the Kaaba and make dua
  3. Walk to Marwah: Walk normally to Marwah (this is one lap)
  4. Run between green markers: Men should run between the green lights
  5. Complete seven laps: Safa to Marwah = 1, Marwah to Safa = 2, etc.
  6. End at Marwah: The seventh lap ends at Marwah

Sa'i Duas:

At Safa and Marwah, recite:

إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَآئِرِ اللّهِ

"Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah"

5. Halq or Taqsir (Hair Cutting)

The final step of Umrah is cutting or trimming the hair, which symbolizes renewal and purification.

Halq (Complete Shaving)

  • Shaving the entire head
  • Preferred for men
  • Brings more reward
  • Must be done by a professional

Taqsir (Trimming)

  • Cutting at least fingertip length
  • Option for men and women
  • Women only trim, never shave
  • Can be done yourself

6. Visiting Madinah

While not part of Umrah, visiting Madinah is highly recommended to visit the Prophet's Mosque and pay respects.

What to Do in Madinah:

  • Pray in Masjid an-Nabawi (Prophet's Mosque)
